This year I’ve started to track what I’ve been reading and so far I’ve read 46 books. Now the majority of those are graphic novels but they still count! I have a terrible habit of borrowing all the new comics I purchase for the library (to help reader’s advisory of course!), plus purchase many for myself both digital and physical. Tomorrow I’ll discuss my current ongoing reading but here I’m going to list my favourite collected volumes I’ve finished this year. Some are recent publications but many are older ones I’m finally catching up on.
Stand outs include Sex Criminals, Daytripper, and Saga. One that took me by surprise was The Grand Duke; a WWII story of a German Luftwaffe pilot and the Russian Nachthexen (Night Witches), it was good to read a WWII narrative from a side other than the English or Americans and there was some sympathy for the German pilot and his Jewish comrade. Also, the Night Witches are amazing and you should all read about them!
I’m also currently catching up on long running series I started as a teenager. I was very happy, and sad, to finish Transmetropolitan. An amazing series with excellent writing that makes you want to write hard hitting articles. Ranma 1/2 has been released recently in double volumes and I’m collecting the whole set, who doesn’t love a bit of gender bending manga?
